A Look At UK Soccer

The FA Premier League Partnership, also known as UK soccer, was first founded in 1992 and is a league that is reserved for the top UK soccer clubs in the English system. This distinction makes it England?s primary soccer competition. Each year, 20 teams compete for the league championship but, oddly enough, only four teams have been crowned. Why? Because these four teams have dominated UK soccer since it?s inception. These include Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea and Manchester United. Of these four UK soccer clubs, Manchester United has been the most successful after having won the championship title on eight occasions. The current league champions are Chelsea, who clinched their second consecutive title during the 2005-06 season.

The sport of UK soccer hasn?t always been as popular as it is today. In fact, the 1980s marked a particularly low point for the sport. Stadiums were crumbling, which left spectators facing poor facilities. As attendance dropped and conditions worsened, UK soccer was banned from European competition. By the time the 1990s rolled around, things were beginning to change and the ban formerly preventing English teams from competing was lifted.

At the conclusion of the 1991 season, a proposal for a new league was presented and was one that would bring additional revenue into the sport. The Founder Members Agreement, which was signed in July 1991, established the basic foundation for the FA Premier League. The new division was given a license to negotiate broadcast and sponsorship agreements, which was a necessary part of successful competition. In 1992, the FA Premier League was formed as a limited company and operated out of an office at the former headquarters of the Football Association.

The 1992-93 season marked the first of many competitions for the new face of UK soccer. Due to the rules governed by the FIFA, the number of teams was reduced to twenty in 1995. Today, the FA Premier League is a corporation that is owned by the 20 member clubs of UK soccer. Each team is considered to be a shareholder and has the opportunity to vote on important issues, including rule changes and contracts. Each team has the power to elect a Chairman, Chief Executive and Board of Directors to oversee their day-to-day activities. The Football Association is not directly involved with these operations, but it does have veto power during team elections.

Today, a typical UK soccer season consists of 20 teams competing against one another on two separate occasions. One half of the season is dedicated to home games and the second half, which repeats the same schedule as the first, entails each team playing their competitors for a second time at a different location. For instance, the first half of a season may be comprised of home games and the second half would be played on the competitors home turf. At the conclusion of each season, the champions are named according to points awarded throughout the season. If a tie occurs, a one match playoff is held to determine which top four teams will qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Learn The Basics Of The Game Of Soccer

The game of soccer is played in two halves, the lengths varying between age groups, but professionals, college and high school play two 45 minute halves. The most obvious rules to soccer are that the game is played between two teams, consisting of nine players and a goalie. The players on each team are divided into offense and defense, and are only allowed to play the soccer ball with their feet. The main objective in soccer is to kick the ball into the opposing teams? goal, scoring a point, or a goal. Only the goalie is allowed to use either his or her hands as well as feet.

Soccer players will often practice ?juggling?, which is a skill that consists of keeping the ball in the air through the use of the feet, knees, thighs, head, or chest, all legal places on the body to control the ball. The use of the hands or the arm will result in the opposing team taking possession of the ball.

When a player on one of the teams kicks or knocks the ball out of bounds on the two long sides of the soccer field, the opposing team them takes possession of ball by doing a ?throw-in?, in which both of the feet must remain on the ground while the player throws the soccer ball back into play. If the soccer ball is kicked out of bounds over the line of their own goal, it then results in a ?corner kick? where the opposite team takes the ball to the corresponding corner and kicks the ball back into play to one of their teammates. However, if the team kicks the ball out of bounds over the goal line of the opposing teams? goal, the play will then turn to a ?goal kick? taken by one of the defensive players of that team.

?Fouls? are called under a number of circumstances. A few of them are when a player touches the ball with his hand or arm, if a player slide tackles another player, excessive pushing, tripping or force, unsportsmanlike conduct, or off-sides (when the offense of one team is closer to the goal they are trying to score on than that teams? defense; unless the ball was there first). In these circumstances, the referee will generally call the ball dead in the spot where the foul occurred, and give the opposite team a ?free kick?.

In the case that the regulation time of the soccer runs out while the score is still tied, it will often result in a ?shootout? where the goalie of one team is up against a single player from the opposing team. The first one to score a goal wins the game.

Soccer Skill Drills: Trapping

Click Here To Know How To Play The Best Soccer of Your Life

Trapping is one of the most important elements when it comes to caching about soccer skill drills. Let me give you a brief insight into the same.

  • The Foot
  • It is very important for the coach to teach players how to use the foot to ?capture? balls descending, near or on the ground. For this, the players should get in front of the ball.

They should learn to extend the leg and foot forward of the body, anticipating the arrival of the ball. When the ball meets the foot, the coach needs to teach the players how to pull the leg back to slow the ball, or ?cushion? the ball.

The ball will carom off the foot and out of control of the player if they do not pull back their foot. If you are coaching a team of younger players, it is better to start with the inside of the foot.

An expert coach knows that this is the largest and most forgiving area of the foot and it will make the younger players learn the things more comfortably.

However, if you are coaching a team of more advance players, you can practice trapping with the instep or top of the foot and both inside and outside of the foot.

You should teach the players how to eventually advance to using the shin and ankle for higher or wildly bouncing balls.

  • The Thigh
  • The thigh has a larger size and contains higher fatty tissue. Therefore, an expert coach knows that thighs could be a very effective method for trapping both slow and fast airborne passes below the chest. Have the player get in front of and square to the incoming ball.

Teach them to stand on one foot and raise the other knee and thigh to meet the ball. Once contacted, the players should quickly drop the knee, allowing the ball to shortly ?stick? to the thigh. This practice should be continued until the ball rolls from the thigh to the feet.

When it comes to teaching trapping while coaching soccer skill drills, the theory for the chest theory is the same as the thigh, but execution is slightly different.

Andre Botelho is a recognized authority on the subject of soccer skill drills. His web site, Youth Soccer Drills, provides a wealth of informative soccer articles, resources and tips for soccer coaches, parents and players.
